A. J. Martyr's Engine Testing Book 3rd Edition to be Released at 2007 SAE World Congress

PLYMOUTH, Mich., April 16 /PRNewswire/ -- The 3rd Edition of Engine Testing, by A. J. Martyr and M. A. Plint, will be released in June 2007 by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and Elsevier Limited. This new edition is a major re-write by the surviving author, A. J. Martyr.

This book brings together the large amount of scattered information on theory and practice of engine testing, a fundamental part of development of new engine and powertrain systems, as well as modification of existing systems. This 3rd edition has a strong system integration theme, which is a vital part of the modern test engineer's requirements.

"The subject is now too wide for any one individual," said Tony Martyr, technical director, AVL UK Limited. "This 3rd edition has been rewritten to give the new generation of engineers, with more specialized skills, a view of the whole range of discipline and design practices outside their specialty with which they have to integrate."
The book retains all the basic physics of the first two editions, but in a rearranged format generated from reader feedback. The book also features a new first chapter focusing on problems faced by engineers that have to specify or project manage the construction or up-grade of test facilities, as well as practical experience advice. There is also an expanded chapter on chassis dynamometers.

Martyr, a 40-year veteran of the testing world, has extensive, world-wide experience both as a user and a designer of test facilities. Within AVL, he teaches subjects related to project control and test plant system integration. He runs customer seminars on various related subjects including the creation of test facility specifications. Martyr has held technical directorships in three of Europe's top ranked automotive test plant companies.

Martyr will be in the AVL Technology Café, booth #1977, Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. to discuss aspects of test plant integration. This session will concentrate on the start of the process and the problems of creating a test facility specification. Then at 11:00 a.m. he will discuss his 'second law of project control' - paper is cheaper to change than concrete. He will also focus on the more general problems of defining the roles and responsibilities within a complex project.
